Market News for the Year of the Horse | New regulations for CO alarms in Polish residential areas implemented: releasing over 10 million market opportunities by 2030

News2026-06-08
European residential safety regulation upgrades again, Poland opens mandatory installation of CO alarms
Following the strengthening of residential carbon monoxide (CO) safety regulations in countries such as the UK and Ireland, Poland has officially launched a mandatory installation plan for residential smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors, becoming one of the most anticipated changes in residential safety regulations in Europe in recent years. Poland is one of the most typical coal heating countries in Europe, and although it has continued to promote energy transformation in recent years, it is still one of the countries with the highest proportion of coal use in Europe.

According to Polish Smog Alert statistics, many old residential buildings still use solid fuel heating systems, resulting in frequent winter CO poisoning accidents.

According to the new regulations issued by the Polish Ministry of Interior and Administration (MSWiA), starting from December 23, 2024, newly built residential buildings must be equipped with smoke alarms; For residential buildings equipped with combustion appliances such as gas boilers, gas water heaters, fireplaces, coal-fired or wood fired heating equipment, carbon monoxide alarms must be installed.

At the same time, regulations have established clear transition periods:

·Hotels, inns, and short-term rental properties must complete installation before June 30, 2026;

·Before January 1, 2030, all existing residential buildings and apartments must be rectified and meet the requirements.

This means that Poland will establish for the first time a mandatory installation system for CO alarms covering the national residential market.

The market for over 16 million residential units is about to launch
According to the latest data from the Polish National Bureau of Statistics (GUS), as of the end of 2025, the housing stock in Poland is approximately:

16.2 million dwellings (approximately 16.2 million residential and apartment units), including approximately 10.8 million urban dwellings and 5.1 million rural dwellings.

According to the European residential energy structure statistics, a large number of residences in Poland still use natural gas, liquefied gas, coal, biomass fuel or wood heating systems.

The industry generally expects:

·More than 60% -70% of residential buildings need to be equipped with CO alarms;

·The potential coverage of residential units is approximately 9 to 11 million households;

Based on the installation of 1-2 CO alarms per household, the cumulative demand is expected to reach 10 to 20 million units in the coming years. For CO alarm manufacturers, sensor suppliers, and distributors, Poland is becoming one of the most promising emerging markets in Europe.

Does Poland require local certification agencies to certify?
CNBOP: an important sub item in the Polish market

Although there is no mandatory local certification requirement, CNBOP has a high influence in the Polish firefighting industry. CNBOP-PIB (Scientific and Research Centre for Fire Protection) is one of the most authoritative fire product testing and certification organizations in Poland.

For residential CO alarms:

CNBOP certification is usually not a legal requirement, but it has significant advantages in the following areas:

Government procurement projects

Real estate development projects

Recommended directory by the fire department

Access to large-scale distribution channels

Therefore, many international brands choose to further obtain CNBOP recognition after completing EN 50291 certification to enhance their competitiveness in the local market.

Climate characteristics and CO sensor selection in Poland
Poland has a long winter, usually requiring heating for 6 to 8 months each year, and its climate conditions determine that its demand for carbon monoxide detectors is much higher than that of southern European countries. For CO alarm manufacturers, Poland belongs to a typical wide temperature application market:

Extreme low temperatures in winter can reach below -20 ° C

In summer, the temperature in attic and enclosed spaces can exceed 40 ° C

Long term high humidity environment

Frequent condensation and dew formation

Therefore, manufacturers of carbon monoxide detectors must pay special attention to the selection of key components such as CO sensors

✓ Wide temperature performance

✓ Long term stability

✓ Low temperature start-up capability

✓ Ability to resist humidity effects

✓ Anti silicon poisoning ability

It should be noted that traditional water based carbon monoxide sensors add pure water to the water storage tank, which freezes in low temperature environments, resulting in the inability to provide the water needed for chemical reactions, thus preventing chemical reactions from occurring and causing the sensor to lose its detection function.

ProSense FC-CO-5000 and FCW-CO-5000-0X: A Unified Sensing Platform Covering Multiple Scenarios
ProSense provides a carbon monoxide sensing solution that covers multiple application scenarios, bringing higher design flexibility to carbon monoxide detector manufacturers and significantly simplifying product compliance processes.

For cross-border e-commerce and whole machine alarm manufacturers, choosing sensor solutions with multi scenario compliance capabilities and mature engineering verification foundations is an important prerequisite for reducing certification risks and accelerating the listing process.

Relying on continuous independent research and development capabilities, the FC-CO-5000 and FCW-CO-5000-0X series carbon monoxide sensors launched by ProSense are currently the only carbon monoxide sensor solutions in the industry that meet UL certification requirements for residential, RV, and yacht applications in both the European Union and North America. They provide a more efficient and reliable core sensor platform for global carbon monoxide detector manufacturers.

In the design phase, the product is systematically planned around multi application scenario compliance and long-term reliable operation, fully considering the comprehensive requirements of temperature adaptability, stability, and consistency of sensors under different environmental conditions. This helps the whole machine manufacturer build a product portfolio covering multiple markets on a single sensing platform.

By adopting FC-CO-5000 and FCW-CO-5000-0X, complete machine manufacturers can reduce the design and certification complexity caused by differences in application scenarios while meeting the requirements of EN50291-1, EN50291-2, UL 2034 (5th edition), and CSA 6.19-17 standards.

Market oriented value
Unified platform: One sensor covers multiple application scenarios, simplifying product portfolio

Compliance guarantee: supporting certification needs for mainstream residential, RV, and yacht markets in the European Union and North America

Reliable operation: Adapt to complex environmental conditions and enhance the long-term stability of end products

Accelerating time to market: reducing the time and cost pressure of repeated testing and re certification
